You can't beat some of these lesser known, or at least lesser discussed in the mainstream, Italian white wines (quite a few fit the bill, but we're thinking Vermentino, Soave, Verdicchio, Timorasso, Arneis).
It's a been a while since we've seen a Gavi at Costco, so it was a nice surprise to find this bottle from a producer who has given us a very tasty $25 Barolo at Costco in the past.
This wine earned 90 points from Wine Enthusiast and retail price is around $18, so a good price at Costco for $14.99.
Gavi wines are made from the Cortese grape in southeastern Piedmont and this one is a nice expression of what to expect from the varietal.
The wine pours almost clear in the glass, with a citrusy, floral nose; flavors of green apple, grapefruit, apricot and lemon; medium body with crisp acidity; nice minerality which we always love with a salty, dry finish.
A very nice wine, and a perfect food companion for summer cuisine, especially salads and seafood.
We hope to see more of these Italian whites continue to make their way onto Costco shelves, and the timing is perfect with summer approaching.
