2023 Kirkland Signature Toscana

The Kirkland Toscana has always been a moving target for us among the Kirkland wines, usually coming in a little short of expectations.

But we felt there was a turn around with the 2022 vintage, which we rated 89 points, the highest we've ever gone for this wine.

The price has been steadily creeping up as well, so we were surprised to find this new 2023 vintage at our Costco for $12.99. The store did not have the placard out for the wine at the time of purchase.

$12.99 is the lowest price this bottle has ever seen. The closest vintage to that price is the inaugural one way back with the 2014 vintage that was priced at $13.99.

Here are our ratings for this wine over the years:

2014 vintage: 88 points

(this wine took a bit of a hiatus for a few years as best we can tell)

2019 vintage: 87 points

2020 vintage: 86 points

2021 vintage: 86 points

2022 vintage: 89 points

Some of these vintages we felt came in a little light and thin, and this 2023 vintage is teetering in that territory once again but finds a way to save itself.

The wine is a medium ruby in the glass; spicy and herbal nose with red and dark fruit; medium in body with some good acidity which helps; flavors are black cherry, blackberry; notes of baking spice, cedar, vanilla; finish could last a bit longer.

We're going 87 this time around; really pulling for this wine, but it remains middle of the road, at least for us.

It's a good table wine, or pizza bottle, but not one that we buy too many of each year.
