The Kirkland Alexander Valley Cab is always one I look for to hit stores, because you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get.
And I’ve had a few readers write to me who also look forward to this one, and who have told me the ’14 that is hitting stores now was pretty tasty. So I was excited to dig in to see how it stacks up to years past.
Reading through my tasting notes from last year, this wine seems pretty similar. Perfume, floral aromas on the nose; vibrant flavor, mostly red fruit, cherry dominated, a little sourness like was noted in the prior vintage.
The flavor really grips and holds on into a particularly long finish, especially for a wine that costs $10. The wine is pretty closed on the initial pour so needs a little air to open up.
In this price range, there are few, if any, wines from Alexander Valley that could hang in this crowd. It’s not an amazing wine necessarily, but it is really a nice buy in my opinion at this price.
A perfect mid-week drink, and the kind of wine you expect from the Kirkland label – a good wine from a top area priced less than anything else from that area.
