2014 Au Contraire Russian River Chardonnay

2014 Au Contraire Chardonnay

As we continue our summer Chardonnay scouting expedition, we've come across a particularly nice Chardonnay value in the Costco aisles.  This was a shy and skittish selection – the bottles were tucked away in the Chardonnay aisle with literally nothing drawing attention to it.  Yet, it’s sort of a big deal: it is the first US brand developed by the Taub family, owners of leading importer Palm Bay International.  Grown in the Russian River area, and winemaker Tom Hinde has done an admirable job creating a Burgundy type wine (although without the minerality).  The wine is divided between tank and barrel (French oak, 30% new) And the price is right at just under $13.   (it sells for between $14-17 in other wine stores)

This is delightfully floral with notes of apple, pear and grapefruit; a very crisp wine, with layers of citrus.  Despite the rich accent, it's light-bodied and easy to like, offering subtle complexity and a very clean finish.  Very fruit forward, ripe apple/pear with citrus notes, just a hint of oak with well-balanced acidity, nice complexity; full of varietal character and harmonious with food.  Its acidity and minerality are balanced, leaving a lingering fruit finish. Very nice wine at an excellent price point.   Don’t miss this one.
