We're always looking to Portugal for big value and here's a perfect case in point. This is a stunning red blend for $17 at Costco.
It took a little while to figure out why we liked it so much, and the answer is: this wine has a foot in the old world, and a foot in the new world. It's modern in style with lively, bright fruit, but with rustic old world DNA.

The blend here is 40% Aragonez, 40% Alicante Bouschet, 10% Touriga Nacional and 10% Syrah. 91 points from Wine Advocate for the prior vintage. For us, this is easy 92 point territory all day long.
In the glass this wine is a medium purple with dark fruit, earth and herbs on the nose; medium plus in body with grippy tannins; flavors of dark fruit, blackberry, black cherry and plum; touch of mineral / graphite; finishes strong and spicy.

Sometimes you can judge a wine by how it puts a smile on your face. This one is just delicious, and just what you want. We're smiling as we put it on our Top Picks list. Hope to see future vintages in Costco.
