There are quite a few Kirkland Signature Series bottles available at my Costco right now that have really grabbed my attention. I just reviewed and loved the Signature Series Mendoza Malbec. During my most recent visit, I found this Oakville Merlot, along with two other Kirkland Signature Series wines I’m really excited about: a 2012 Napa Cabernet and a 2012 Willamette Valley Pinot. Look for those in forthcoming reviews.
Oakville is obviously the heart of Napa and I typically love wines from this area so was interested to see what the Merlot would bring, especially at $14.99 which is a price where you rarely find Oakville wines. And I thought this was a pretty good buy. This is a big wine, loaded with flavor, buoyed by notes of fresh leather (new wallet), dark fruit, spice, pepper and a little wood on the finish. Heavy leather; good body, juicy; finish skids out a little bit. But all in all, not a bad buy for fruit from a premier Napa region.
