I’ve always enjoyed the Montecillo Riojas and was pumped to see a 2008 Reserva hit Costco shelves for only $10.99. This is a great bargain on a solid wine for red fans that’s already aged and ready to enjoy now.
Dried floral nose with some spice; on the palate flavors of dark fruit, with leather and hints of black licorice; the tannins are nice and soft presenting a great mouthfeel. On day two, this wine opened up even more with the fruit really starting to come through. This is an excellent price for this wine. You’d be hard pressed to find many Cabs or blends priced around $10 that are more enjoyable than this one. A nice food wine too, versatile to pair with just about anything.
This is definitely going on the Top Picks list. You don’t want to miss this bottle at the special Costco price (for reference, it’s almost twice as much at Wine.com). You typically see the lesser priced, but still decent, Monticello Rioja Crianza (red label) at this price point; not the Reserva.
