2019 Ravanal Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Ravanal Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon

This was quite the surprise. Not only a limited time discount, but featuring a Gran Reserva Cabernet from Chile; not something we see everyday in Costco.

But we’re glad we found it, and we continue to believe that places like Chile, and Portugal; Spain too and Australia is on the up and up – all deliver a huge bang for the buck in the current wine world.

This price is hard to beat. $6 off until Feb 4 brings the price down to only $8.99 from $14.99. A quick online search shows retail at $22, so scoring this for $9 is awesome.

As we get into this one, it’s worth noting up front that this is a little unique, very oaky, lots going on; just a wee bit different than your standard Cabernet.

The wine pours a medium to dark ruby in the glass; really oaky on the nose, like walking down the lumber aisle at Home Depot. In the mouth, fantastic flavor, medium plus body, black cherry, blackberry and plum; vanilla, mocha in the finish which is very lasting.

This is a unique wine that is maybe not for everyone. At this price you’d be tempted to stock up and you may or may not want to after you taste it. But there’s a lot going on here.

I think 88 points is very fair for this wine. There’s a lot to like but a bit of an acquired taste for a wine like this. All that said, we are glad we tasted it, and glad to see a wine like this from Chile in Costco stores.

Why are all these deals on the east coast? I live in Washington and rarely see any of these options?.?

@Andy, I live in Washington State as well. Costco’s headquarters is a few miles away. While we may not get the same wines as some East Coast stores, we definitely get some astonishing wines that are never seen on the East Coast, in particular Washington, Oregon and California wines. My feeling is that supply is limited on some wines and they will only stretch so far. Other factors might include regional differences insofar as what customers prefer.

Your comment about the Ravanal wine was absolutely spot on regarding your score and comments. Keep up the good work. I work part time in the wine section in several of the Atlanta area COSTCO'S

Our Costco in Knoxville Tn was at 9.69, but I bought a couple of bottles to give it a try.

I haven't seen the Ravanal or Colene Clemens at the 3 Costco stores I visit in the greater Boston area. The selection must be different by area since there are some discounted ones in our area that I don't see mentioned here. Perhaps you could create different pages for different areas.

Bought a long time in Delaware and saw last week in Charlotte. Bought one and tried and went back for 6 more than bought a case and may buy some more before Feb 4. Wife and I both like it a lot.
