2012 Ramos Premium Red Alentejano

2012 Ramos Premium Red Alentejano

2012 Ramos Premium Red AlentejanoAn absolute gem of a red wine drinking perfectly right now.  This was a surprise find for $16 at my Costco.  When I’m looking for a very nice wine at a good price, I typically gravitate to Spain and Portugal.  In this case I actually had a higher priced Rioja in my hand and made a last minute switch to this wine.  I’ve had this varietal blend before (Ramos too I believe), and something just felt right.

Overall, this is a very elegant, well balanced, flavor packed, enjoyable wine.  Aromas of ripe fruit and dried herbs.  In the mouth, this wine is medium to full in body, tight tannins, plenty of red fruit with chocolate undertones. Towards the end the spice character picks up.  The finish is long and sticky.  I’m really enjoying this wine, even more than I originally thought that I might.

The blend is 40% Aragonez (which you may know as Tempranillo), 30% Syrah and 30% Touriga Nacional (Portugal’s premier grape and one that is gaining in popularity around the globe).  If you see this wine at your Costco, think about being a little adventurous and dropping it in your cart.  I have a feeling you might be surprised.
