2012 Chateau Pegau Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Maclura

2012 Chateau Pegau Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Maclura

Domaine du Pegau is a huge name in winemaking in the Rhone region of France, primarily from the excellent wines produced in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, of which I have a couple in my cellar since after every bottle I try I only want to stock up on more.  I had never tried their standard Cotes du Rhone offering, so as you can imagine, I was pleasantly surprised to see this bottle show up in my Costco for $16.99.

This is a standard Rhone blend: 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault.  Vibrant nose that is floral and spicy with dried fruit.  Ripe tannins make the wine feel chewy in the mouth, with nice dark fruit flavor and pepper that carries into a super dry finish.

This is exactly what I expected it to be, a “baby Chateauneuf” if you will, at a reasonable price.  Super food friendly and versatile.  This is why I love Southern Rhone wines.

I would like to second (or third) the comments on the Kirkland Rioja. At $6.99 it is an absolute steal. Like a lot of the Spanish wines, it has been in the barrel for a while---believe this is a 2010--- and it is very rich and the tannins are well resolved from the ageing. Also a slight licorice taste. Super bargain.

Was recently @ a COSTCO in New Jersey and stumbled upon the KIRKLAND RIOJA for $6.99. A true CASE BUY!!!

Do you know how I could find it closer to home in Seattle? I have no idea how COSTCO wine distribution works an how I could track it down? It was FANTASTIC!

Thanks! Mark

There have been some other readers who wrote in about the Kirkland Rioja, but unfortunately I have yet to run into it in the stores near me. Thanks for the heads up. In terms of distribution, we are independent of Costco so have no inside info. It's a moving target. If you do see it I'd recommend buying that case because you might not see it again for a while.
