Regular readers have heard us ask for new grapes and regions to hit Costco shelves, and here’s exactly what we’re looking for.
Aglianico is a key grape varietal in southern Italy that is starting to get the attention it deserves in the US now at wine shops and restaurants. We’re seeing it way more now than just a few years ago, and that’s a great thing because these are fantastic wines at typically very good prices.
In the case of this bottle, Costco’s price is competitive at $14.99, considering online the bottle goes for between $17-$23 depending on where you look.
It was also named #49 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2022 as shown on the Costco placard along with a 91 point rating, and we agree 100%.
In the glass the wine is a deep ruby with black fruit, earth and spice on the nose. In the mouth are flavors of blackberry and plum; the wine is full bodied and super acidic; bone dry in the finish, just calling for some hearty Italian food.
A nice representation of Aglianico for those who have never tried it, and a really fun, different wine to try if you see it pop up in aisles near you.

This is just about my favorite Italian wine and from it's classic region - certainly for everyday drinking and no particular special occasion. When it's good; it's very good.

Picked up a few bottles last week at the Hoover AL location and plan to go back for more. The editors review is spot on. It paired tremendously with kirklands lasagna!

Picked up 3 bottles as Aglianico Del Vultures are one of our all time favorites and at an incredible $15. Wished we had picked up a case. Been back shortly thereafter and it was all gone. BUMMER!
