Here’s a fun Costco wine find that we felt drank way above its pay grade.
Penfolds is a mega Aussie producer, and they make a lot of great wine. Bin 28, which was first produced in 1958, is the earliest of their Bin series. This wine received 90+ points from almost every critic, and after we got into it, it became clear why.
This bottle was also listed as #41 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2020. Retail price is around $35; K&L sells it for $29.99 so Costco’s price is pretty good at $25.99. Lots going for it, so let’s jump into the tasting notes.
The wine pours a medium purple in the glass with an aromatic nose of ripe berries, spice, and a little vanilla; it is medium plus to full in body; big in the mouth, nice concentration; flavors of dark fruit, blackberry, plum with some mocha; spicy, earthy into a finish that lingers for a while.
We thought this was a beautiful wine: interesting, big, spicy and dying to be paired with a juicy steak. It was tasty in its youth, but could definitely lay down for a few more years.
At $26 this isn’t an inexpensive wine. But you’d be hard pressed to find many bottles priced the same that could match its quality. We’ll be adding this to our Top Picks list, and I plan to grab a couple more on my next trip if I find them.

This is one of those instances that i'll try most anything with Penfold on it. It's a lovely wine for a good price point - it can please a self anointed wine expert as well as the masses. Great pick Andrew
