2015 Wines Of Substance Columbia Valley CS Cabernet Sauvignon

Published: Mar 14, 2018 by Editor ·

This is a very nice Washington State Cabernet for the money ($12.99) and serves as a perfect everyday drinker.  It is big and bold in style like so many of these Washington State reds can be, but when you're in the right mood, they can serve you nicely.

This one pours in the glass about as dark as wine can get.  Foresty, earthy nose with violets; full bodied with power that just keeps coming in waves. Dark fruit, blackberry, anise with notes of dark chocolate. Very dry finish.

This wine is young and juicy, bursting with energy. It’s big and fresh, making it a nice wine to curl up with on a chilly day, but it can be equally enjoyable with a hearty meal. I'm finding lots to like here from a renowned winemaker (K Vintners) and the price is hard to beat.

Parker went 92 points on this wine and stated that it is "one of the best values I’ve tasted in a long time."  I think that might be a bit much but I don't disagree on the wine being a tremedous value at only $13.  It’s good but perhaps not 92 good.

I’m going a very respectable 89 and this is a wine I will clearly be stocking up on if it hangs around my Costco. At this price I have a feeling it’s going to move fast though when word gets out.  It seems like you should be paying more for this one, which is always a scenario I like.

what do you guys think it is that bitter initial taste, which gets slightly milder after sometimes in the glass?
how do you call the bitter with the proper name ?
I will try the second bottle tonight . just in case it was the bottle itself ..
it is a strong wine .. what a pity for not being finished in something I cannot catch .. of course if it was it would have been so much higher in pricing

      Hi Marino,
Often times these big huge wines from WA State or hefty Napa reds need a littler oxygen to balance out after you pull the cork.
I typically decant most wines or at least pour a few glasses to expose the wine to air, even when they’re young like this. Moreso with older wines of course.

Peggy says "Damn good wine!" and I concur. I don't know about 92 and 89, I just know what I like. Back to Costco in the morning.
