2019 Kirkland Signature Pinot Grigio Friuli

Published: May 23, 2020 · Modified: Feb 12, 2021 by Editor ·

This is always a hard wine for me to peg down. Some years I like it a lot more than others, and I'm starting to think that it might be situational. It is a wine with an intended purpose - hot summer weather - and when it is consumed in that environment, it's a treat. Otherwise, it can be quite light and thin.

This all started when we reviewed the 2017 vintage of the wine, and I noted that it would be great on a hot summer day, but I don't think I tasted it on a hot summer day. We gave that wine 85 points. Moving on to the 2018 vintage, we actually really enjoyed it, and admitted we might have missed the mark on the prior review. We gave that wine 88 points.

Just noticed the 92 points for the 2018 vintage on the card from the BTI (Beverage Tastings Institute; I think that's a bit generous.

Now that you have that bit of background, I think we're starting to get somewhere. The good news right off the bat is that the price continues to be $5.99 which is pretty good for any drinkable wine, which this one certainly is.

This year as we tasted through this bottle, we enjoyed it on a hot Atlanta late afternoon while the Green Egg was coming to temp, and really enjoyed it. Yes, it is simple, light and thin. It's kind of like a super light lemonade in fact. Just like lemonade is awesome on a hot day, so is this wine.

I have similar tasting notes to the prior year vintages; the wine pours almost clear in the glass, light aromas of citrus fruit and orange peel on the nose. A bit of citrus fruit, grapefruit in the flavor with some acidity. Finishes super crisp and refreshing.

This is not a bad buy for only $6 if this sounds like the kind of wine you like. It has few, if any, competitors as good at that price. But if you like a bit more depth and complexity, I'd look towards something with a little more heft like the Kirkland Premier Cru Chablis.

This wine in particular hits me very hard the next day. I know it's on the cheaper end, but it has me wondering if I need to pay more attention to sulfites.
