2015 Kirkland Signature Russian River Pinot Noir

Published: Apr 29, 2017 by Editor ·

For me, the Kirkland Russian River Pinots seems to always leave a bit to be desired.  On one hand, it's awesome that you can buy a wine from this region for $12.99.  You just don't see too many hovering in that price range, and it's really when you hit the $25+ realm when the real gems start making an appearance.

But this is lower octane fuel coming from a good pump.  I wanted to like it so much more, but unfortunately, this new 2015 vintage follows suit with prior vintages we've reviewed.  The notes are almost the same.  It's simple, one dimensional, and light.  I thought it started promising on the nose with nice cherry, violet, earthy aromas.  The wine is medium in body and has a slight spice and peppery notes throughout.

On the palate, there's a short flavor burst, red fruit mostly, jabs, no right hook, with mild flavor.  I found it to plateau fast, and finish quick with a touch of spice.

So for $12.99 is it ok as an everyday wine?  Maybe, but you can also scoop up the '14 Kenwood Russian River Pinot for $8.99 right now, which we thought was fantastic for even less money.  So we'd suggest going that route, something we don't do often with Kirkland wines, but this is one Kirkland wine that didn't hold up to expectations.

Recently enjoyed Belle Glos Dairyman Pinot - also from Russian River. One of the better Pinots I've had, much more rich fruit and substance than most pinots. Unfortunately, at $50 a bottle its not something that would be an everyday drinker for me.

Not sure if others have had this on, but any similar pinots at a more reasonable price point that may be out there?

Wait for our next review! I have a bottle of the Dairyman but haven't tried it yet. Shea at $27.99 is a great wine also.
