2014 Decoy by Duckhorn Sonoma County Red Wine

Published: Nov 11, 2017 · Modified: Feb 12, 2021 by Editor ·

Not everyone knows that Decoy wines are made by Duckhorn, but the token phrase on the back label alludes to those in the know positioning the bottles as, "the everyday wine for the well informed."  Well, now you're among the well informed.

It's hard to say these are "baby Duckhorn" wines.  I think the Decoy wines are generally good values but they are a little different than their more expensive counterparts assembled by Duckhorn over in neighboring Napa.

That said, this Merlot driven blend consists of 52% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah, 8% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot.  And it stacks up really nice as the everyday drinker it's positioned to be.

The Decoy wines are always a good buy at Costco.  This wine comes in at $17.89, from a retail price of $25.  Finding it for under $20, I'd say this is a pretty good buy.

Fragrant/floral aromas to start; in the mouth, it's medium plus in body with lively acidity; flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and subtle notes of white chocolate and espresso; solid finish, dusty, dry and layered.

The more I got into this one, the better it got.  Give it a little air, pair with almost anything, and enjoy.  This is a great, versatile wine to have on hand for almost any occasion.
