I usually enjoy most of Duckhorn's Decoy wines, particularly the whites, and I find them to be solid values, especially with the competitive prices you can find them for at Costco. This Sonoma red Bordeaux style blend was $17.89, which is well below anywhere else I've seen it, and a good 25% below retail.
The wine is comprised of 25% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Zinfandel, 15% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petite Sirah, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, and being a 2013, I was even more interested, because '13 is one of my favorite vintages of Napa reds in some time (this was just confirmed on a recent Napa trip; I was hot on the '12s, but I'm even hotter on the '13s).
Subtle nose with hints of red berry fruit and even some cranberry; in the mouth this wine is medium/medium plus in body, gentle and sleek with sticky tannins; flavors of sour cherry, raspberry, even a little mint, leading into more chocolate and spice towards the finish; the wine leads a little to be desired in terms of overall depth but that's why you step it up to the real Duckhorn wines. Finishes sticky and dry.
Overall, not a bad buy in this price range and a wine that I'd recommend. Once you reach $25-$30 (closer to the retail price of this wine) you can score some better bottles, so Costco's price on this one is right where it should be in my opinion.
