New $7 Kirkland Rioja spotted - JME Seleccion

Published: Feb 27, 2025 by Editor · 15 Comments

Kirkland Rioja JME Seleccion

There's a brand new Kirkland Rioja out there, spotted first by our reader Dave P at a Costco store in Bend, Oregon.

Price was $6.99 and Costco item number is 917056. This is actually slightly less expensive than the current Kirkland Rioja Reserva.

Ironically, the item number is the same. Interesting development for sure, and our early tasting reports from Dave P indicated the wine is a winner and a huge bang for the buck.

We hope to find and review soon. Cheers.

It is in Scottsdale, too! Had 2 of my 3 bottles so far. It punches way above its $6.99 price. Probably in the 87-88 range.

    It’s a steal at $6.99. Case-worthy.

Here in San Juan Capistrano, CA.
The best Kirkland Rioja Reserve so far. The 2019 was nice but side by side the 2020 is much better. A winner.

Sorry to say this 2020 is not a new source for Kirkland Riojas. It is the same bottler as the 2019 Kirkland Reserva Rioja - Bodegas Eguia. In fact the cork and the foil are almost identical. The label says JME Selección and honors a 3rd generation winemaker Julian Maria Entrena. That being said, it is a decent everyday wine, esp for $6.99. Side by side with the 2019, I actually liked the 2019. Perhaps the extra year in bottle has mellowed out some of the rough edges?
I found it at Costco Henrico, VA.

I bought eight bottles even though there were no reviews yet, figuring I couldn't go wrong, given that it was a Kirkland, but I regret it, even at this ridiculously low price. It's very thin and generic; after a day it was at least recognizably a Rioja. At about the same price, the 2022 Kirkland Signature Bordeaux Superieur was a steal. That was 87 points on this blog, as I recall. This one barely merits an 85.

Interestingly, bottle no. 3 told a different story. Still not great, but better than I said in my comment above. And it improved after being open 2 days, acquiring more depth and character. Go figure.

Just showed up in Durham, NC. Don't expect a lot for $7, but this is typically a very good value. Have to say I really liked the label though. Very traditional.

It’s okay, but I’ve got Costco’s Esteban Martin garnacha/syrah next to it and it’s cheaper and more drinkable.
