Yeah, we know, not a wine but this is a Costco item that demanded exploration.
Occasionally, we’ll review beer we find at Costco and as many of you probably can attest, they can really be hit or miss.
The Kirkland Signature Light Beer is one that became famous online for its low quality. It was discontinued in 2018 but you can still read some of the entertaining reviews on Untappd where it earned a 2.0 rating.
But this new Helles Style Lager from Kirkland is a whole different deal. The reason it appealed to us so much is because it is produced by Deschutes Brewery out of Bend, OR.
Deschutes is a top notch establishment that we’ve visited several times, and when we were living in Oregon back in the late 90’s, it was the king of Oregon breweries at the time.
Anytime we see the classic Deschutes staple bottle, Black Butte Porter, it always bring back fond memories of relaxing with a burger and a beer after a day of snowboarding on Mt Bachelor.
Since Deschutes was willing to put their name front and center on the packaging, we couldn’t wait to see what they could deliver. Plus we love Helles style lagers, and a 12 pack of this was $13.99; not too shabby.
The beer is a pale gold in the glass; it is slightly sweet, lightly hopped; malty and yeasty; well made with a great body to it; nice crisp finish.
Really a solid beer. No wonder it won a gold medal at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival. Cheers.

I searched for it on the Costco app, and didn't find it in Birmingham, but will keep looking. The helles beers in their German variety beer packs are usually the best in the pack.
