History of the Winery/AVA/Vineyard: Napa Valley

Founded in 1984, Havens Winery started with a vision to utilize Napa Valley’s richly diversified microclimates and follow traditional methods to produce Merlot, Syrah, and Bourriquot, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend modeled after Chateau Cheval Blanc. In 2010, Havens joined the Smith-Anderson Wine Group family. With 30 years of experience in producing exceptional wines, Smith-Anderson introduced Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to Havens’ collection. Havens Winery uses grapes from regions spanning Carneros to Howell Mountain and is known for red blends that combine smooth flavors and rich textures (source: Havens Winery Web Site)

Costco Notes: Dense purple color and beautiful black cherry and blacker fruits, with hints of delicate chocolate and coffee bean.

    Left Coast Tasting Notes:

Color: Very intense inky dark wine with very slight browning of the wine at the edges, which might be expected for a wine of this age.

Nose (aromas): Upon opening this wine, there was nothing on the nose. The bottle that had been opened the night before, once poured in a glass had made all the difference. Opening this Merlot the night before and putting an inert gas on the wine allowed the wine to open up with a lovely bouquet.

Palate (flavors): Pulling the cork, this wine was very tight with a bitter aftertaste. The bottle which was opened the previous night delivered a very fruit forward wine with hints of raspberry, pepper, and a bit of plum. One of the boldest Merlots we have tasted.

Summary: This is an older Merlot that will not age well, so drink it soon. This is a food wine, lovely with a spicy pasta dish, grilled steak, or Carnitas Burritos.

    Rating: Solid Thursday
