I was excited to find this bottle priced at $16.99 at Costco.  At the time, I knew it was typically much more and after searching online I found the regular price tips closer to $26-$28 with a few online outlets going down to $20 [NOTE 7/24: we’ve been informed by readers that some Costco stores …

This Chilean bottle is definitely a different style of Sauvignon Blanc, a little more mineral and earthy than those you will find in other parts of the world.  It took me a little while to warm up to it, and while it has a little unpleasantness toward the finish, the rest of the experience helps …

Here’s a nice inexpensive summer treat at Costco.  The Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc is priced at $7.99 and it’s exactly what you expect and want from a New Zealand style Sauv Blanc – it’s packed with tarty citrus flavor, just perfect to enjoy outside on a hot summer day. Super clear on the pour, the nose …

I’m thrilled to see an influx of South African wines making their way into Costco stores, as it represents an exciting region to explore and one that is producing excellent wines for the money.  This Sauvignon Blanc is a prime example, priced at $11.99 at my Costco; this wine is crisp, acidic, packed with great …

Time flies.  It’s hard to believe we’re drinking 2013 wines already.  The Brancott Sauvignon Blanc is consistently a good buy year after year for fans of New Zealand style whites and this year’s wine is right on par with past vintages.  This 2013 bottle was priced at $8.99 at my Costco. There might be a …

Not a bad buy for only $9.99 at Costco.  There are some aspects of this wine I found very pleasant, and it was a bit of a roller coaster since the wine changed quite a bit after a little air, and after warming up slightly from the (too cold) fridge temp.

I didn’t get a lot on the nose.  There are slight floral aromas surrounded by a notable peach scent.  The wine is a pale yellow in the glass.  Light in body with flavors of citrus fruit, apple, peach and some grapefruity tart.  Finish holds on to that acidity, more tart and wraps up rather quickly.

In all, I really admire Bonterra’s organic growing practices and they produced a good bottle here for the money.  This is a good one for summertime.

Charles Krug is a good dependable name and I generally feel their wines deliver what you want for the price.  This white was $12.99 at Costco and it continues to be a good match of quality to price.

Almost see through in the glass, this wine is packed with lemon, peach, apricot and grapefruit flavors, bright and not too sour or tarty.  Nice through to the finish where the wine falls a little flat and disappears quickly after each sip. Still, not a bad buy, and it is a good versatile summer wine.

I have to admit, not only am I a down-home, straight-from-the-backwoods redneck, but I am one that has grown to love white wine.  I liken it to that trusty can of cold beer in the fridge.  It does one hell of a job quenching a mighty thirst after a long day of yard work or couch surfing while watching football.  Vino blanco is in the same category – I think it might even be the unsung hero of the wine world.  Now, please do not call heresy on me because I have seemingly bunched all white wine into a stereotypical amorphous lot.  I can attest – there are some high dollar, high quality whites out there that will stand against any red, any day.  What I am referencing is the white wine bottle of everyday drinking quality that is hanging out in your fridge right now, beckoning you to pour a glass and allow your troubles to drift away.

Generally, when I think of a good evening Sauvignon Blanc sipper, I robotically go straight to the wines of New Zealand.  Preconceived notion I guess, but I have come to associate one with the other.   However, when this Tangent Winery Sav Blanc came coasting along my way, I had to give it a try.  This wine is well balanced between tart, acidic, dry, and sweet.  No one attribute stands high among the others, which is a good thing when you’re in the mood for uncomplicated.  I immediately picked up on the nose and taste of a Granny Smith apple – tart, yet sweet.  This wine sparkles, and provides subtle hints of citrus fruit, zest, and pineapple.  The aftertaste does not linger, but once again, this is an uncomplicated white that does not layer.  With the alcohol at 13.5%, it may be a little strong on the booze, but after a hard day’s work, maybe that is what you’re going for anyway!  Sophisticated, yet carefree!

On a side note, this is an SIP Certified Sustainable wine.  What does that mean?  These folks are doing a great job by providing great wines while taking good care of the land, the environment, and the people of which provide this awesome grape.  Drink well my friends!

This one is always a summer favorite of mine.  At $7.79 this is a nicely made New Zealand style Sauvignon Blanc.  For fans of these wines, this is exactly what you expect at a great price.

In my review of the 2011 vintage I compared this to the Kim Crawford and White Haven, two very nice wines that taste similar to this one for a few dollars more.  The 2012 retains the same sub $8 price as the 2011, and it really hit me right on the super hot sunny day when I enjoyed it.

Bright citrus flavor all over the palate; a lot of lemon and lime, and some apple and grapefruit. Finishes pretty quick with some tangy acidity.  I’m going to add this bottle to our Value Picks list.  As I said before if you like New Zealand Sauv Blancs, this is a no brainer.

I’ve been working diligently on the latest version of my French Wine Book, “Decoding French Wine: A Beginner’s Guide to Enjoying the Fruits of the French Terroir,” and I’m happy to say that this new second edition is live today on Amazon.com.

The Kindle version is only $3.99 and it includes information on major French wine regions including Bordeaux, Loire, Burgundy, Alsace, Rhone, Languedoc-Roussillon and Champagne.  This book is short and conscise, written to help the beginner wine drinker become more familiar with French wines that may seem overly complicated and complex.

I wanted to really make this simple to digest, and to help turn more people on to these amazing wines.  If you’ve followed this site for a while, you know I have a tendency to review many of the French wines, particularly the 2010 Bordeaux because they are an amazing vintage. But I also look at many other French wines and regions, because the value is typically so great, especially at Costco. So here’s a chance to boost your knowledge and ultimately, your enjoyment, of these awesome wines.

I wasn’t expecting much from a California Sauvignon Blanc priced under $8 but this bottle was a pleasant surprise.  It’s a good wine for the money, and a nice summer one to have on hand.

Not a lot going on with the nose, a little floral, citrus perhaps.  But once the wine gets in your mouth you immediately sense its combination of both freshness and dryness, with a good dose of lemon and lime, with some grapefruit flavors.

It’s clean and rather simple, which might be its saving grace at this price point.  It’s not trying too hard; just enough to be above expectations at this low price point. And that’s not a bad thing.

This is a decent value Sauvignon Blanc for only $7.99.  It’s a little bland on the finish, but the bright fruit and citrus flavor packs a pretty good punch early on for a super inexpensive summer white like this.

Floral nose, citrusy too; the flavor is fresh and vibrant with apricot, peach, lime and grapefruit flavors.  It’s a wine that starts better than it finishes (drops off quick), but for something in this price range, it can easily be looked past.

As is usually the case with Chilean wines, this one offers a good bang for the buck.  A fun summer wine at a great Costco price.

An excellent New Zealand offering for only $11.99. If you typically like New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, this is a must buy.

It’s bright and vibrant, starts with pleasant floral scents on the nose which leads to big tropical fruit – grapefruit, pineapple, lemon.  Nice acidity.  This one hit me right from almost every angle.  A very solid buy.  Pair it up with some summer fare that can hang, and you’re in for a real treat.

I’m going to put this one on our Value Picks list.  It’s hard to beat for a summer white at this price point.
