We got the itch to dig through the cellar to see if we could find something old school that would be fun and interesting after a few years.
The last time we did this we tried the 2015 Kirkland Pauillac Bordeaux which was delicious after seven years of laying down. The only problem is that Costco unfortunately discontinued that bottle shortly after that vintage.
Here we have the 2010 Kirkland Brunello, a bottle we have wanted to crack for the past few years every time we spot it in the cellar. We've been sitting on this for more than nine years.
In our original review back in January of 2016 we praised this wine, going 92-93 points. Unlike the Pauillac Bordeaux, this wine has since lived on with the latest vintage in stores being the delightful 2019 vintage.
Ironically, that new 2019 vintage is the first time since the 2010 vintage we've reached 93 points on this bottle, although it's always landed in the high 80's, low 90's.
Right out of the gate we are really loving the age on this 2010 vintage. It's beautiful, maybe better than expected.
You can see a near perfect cork; we were expecting a little more bleed, but looks like it hung it there nicely.
A little rust color around the edges, garnet in color; very good immediately after opening, but even better with some air.
Dusty, earthy nose, dried fruit; fantastic in the mouth, multi dimensional, layers of fruit dominated by sweet black cherry, plum, anise; velvety tannins and nice acidity; super dry finish that lasts forever.
Wow, quite a treat for people like us who want to taste these wines as they evolve. We're going to bump up the rating to 94 points.
This is a beauty and is encouraging for the aging of future vintages of this bottle (we put an '18 down but that might be it; so talk to you about that one in 10 years). Cheers.

I remember this vintage well. It awakened my palate to how good brunello could be. Subsequent vintages have always been a little disappointing because they could not measure up. Unfortunately did not save a few for my cellar---it was just too good not to pour it forth.

This 2010 bottle was $25 when we purchased it 9 years ago. The current vintage of this wine is $20.
