2021 Joseph Drouhin Saint-Veran Chardonnay

2021 Joseph Drouhin Saint-Veran Chardonnay

White Burgundy on a budget. That’s what you get with wines from Saint-Veran. And as an added bonus here we have a bottle from one of our favorite producers, Joseph Drouhin.

Saint-Veran is Burgundy’s southernmost appellation and slightly overlaps with the northern part of Beaujolais. Wines from this area are 100% Chardonnay, and as you see here, they are often a fraction of the cost you would expect from a Burgundian white.

In the glass this wine pours a medium gold; citrus on the nose with some honey and nuttiness that carries throughout; medium body, nice depth; predominantly flavors of citrus, lemon, grapefruit; nice acidity, minerality; lasting finish.

This was really a fun and enjoyable wine; perfect for all types of white wine fans and especially Chardonnay lovers who have yet to taste wines from this region.

Dear Andrew,

My wife and I drank this Saint-Veran last night, and your review is spot-on.

The legendary chef Julia Child famously declared her favorite meal to be a "simple roast chicken and a white Burgundy." Over the last 50 of my seventy years, I've enjoyed that combination innumerable times.

So for Costco fans, it would be hard to find a more perfect, easier, and more delicious combination that the Drouhin Saint-Veran and Costco's delicious roast chicken. For a total of twenty-three bucks, it's the best bargain on this side of the Atlantic.

To answer your question below, Steve, if there is a trace of oak in this wine, it doesn't leap out. It's clean as a whistle; not quite Chablis-like, but simply clean, with a "lasting finish" as Andrew noted.

Keep up the good work, Andy!

Sincerely,

Steve

It would be great to also know if the wine spent much if any time in oak or entirely in stainless steel or cement tanks. Also, what do you believe the drinking window to be? Thanks.
