2017 Aquinas Pinot Noir

Published: Jan 29, 2022 by Editor ·

We've always been fans of Aquinas wines. The Aquinas Cabernet Sauvignon is consistently a winner and an amazing value at under $20 a bottle.

There was a double bonus here. First finding the Aquinas Pinot Noir at Costco was a treat; on top of that a huge price discount. Costco's normal price of $15.89 is pretty good. And then they discounted it another $6 putting the wine under $10. Retail price on this bottle is $28, and it's online elsewhere for $18.

Aquinas Pinot Noir

The wine pours a pale ruby in the glass with spicy red fruit on the nose; it is medium in body; good flavor that packs a nice punch for a Pinot; flavors of raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate and a little cranberry bite with some acidity.

Finishes good; maybe would like to see it come together a bit more in the end.

But overall, lots to like from this offering, and the $9.89 price tag makes this an easy drop in the cart. Note that the special pricing ends 2/13.

Where is your rating? I can’t tell if this is an 85 or an 89?

@Craig Fredrickson, i have found that you'll find different wine selections in different Costco locations. I learned this by traveling through different states in my RV.

It's a great wine and for that price a good bulk buy if you like Pinot Noir. I checked 4 Chicago area stores and sadly none of them carry it.

This message is not about a particular wine or vintage. I have noticed that the Costco in Scottsdale, AZ store has significantly reduced their bins and wine selections (# of lines) in favor of more wines in stacks. This means less selection but more bottles in the area. There is significantly less selection of Chilean, NZ(except Kim Crawford), CA Pinot, Australian, etc, just to name a few. I spoke to the local merchandise manager and she more or less confirmed this as a directive out of Kirkland, WA. This is very disappointing. I am finding that with a little homework and paying attention to the offers/coupons I am getting better selection in the same price range at Total Wine & Beverage. Would like to hear others opinions. Thanks

@Ted Ryan, I noticed that a few of the Costcos in the western suburbs of Chicago are also cutting down the bin selections and adding additional mass case stackings. Possibly Costco is receiving additional quantity discounts from the wine distributors for purchasing in bulk versus ordering a case at a time for the bins. It does seem like the case stacked wines are at lower price points than the bin wines. I will try to ask further questions about the changes at the store.

Increasing selection of wines in Bay Area. Many bottles $100 and above. Costco responds to local demand. Noticable improvement at Santa Clara and Mtn View Costcos.
