I’ve had a handful of readers write to me about the Silver Palm Cabernet, suggesting we try it, so on a recent trip I was fortunate enough to come across it and I dropped it in the cart.
We just reviewed another, semi-similar Cabernet from Justin that we enjoyed. That wine was great, as Justin bottles usually are, but a little young being a 2016. I like having just a few more years on the wine, and I think you can tell in this 2014 bottle.
My Costco is selling the Silver Palm Cab for $15.99, which is below the full retail price, but I’ve seen it floating around that $16 figure at various outlets, including Total Wine. So the price here again is just ok.
But the wine is enjoyable, I’d even say a hair more tasteful to me than the Justin, although tasting notes are relatively similar between the two.
This Cabernet from Silver Palm is dark in the glass, and dark on the fruit, mostly black cherry and blackberry flavor surrounded by a touch of baking spice; there’s a little toasty oak and anise towards the finish. Dry all around; finish is strong, more elegant than I was expecting.
Not a bad package here at all; I can see why many readers have enjoyed this wine. Another bottle that it reminds me of is the Paul Dolan Cabernet, which is priced about the same and we thought it was fantastic.
All in all, as we said in the Paul Dolan review, it’s hard to find good California Cabernet for around $15, but this Silver Palm fits the bill.
We made a spicy Korean pork dish to pair with the wine that worked out pretty good. The wine might have been a little big had the dish not had the spice kick. I usually prefer tamer reds with pork like Pinot, but the Silver Palm turned out to be a versatile wine that can go with many types of cuisine.

Story Point Cabernet 2015 , incredible bottle , had it in Florida but you can only find it in resteurants through out the San Francisco bay area, though its made here! wine stores don't carry it. Haven't tried the 2014 or 2016 yet. i've been drinking cabs and other reds for over 40 years. the 2015 can run for $11.00-15.00 pending where you can find it. (these prices are from bak east coast).
