2014 The Reinert Project Monterey Pinot Noir

2014 The Reinert Project Monterey Pinot Noir

Here’s an interesting bottle that arrived at Costco stores around the Atlanta area this week after selling out a first run rather quickly.  I’ve heard it’s available right now at Perimeter, Kennesaw (where I purchased a few) and Cumming stores, but Mr Reinert is continuing to create more wines under this label so hopefully distribution will continue to expand to new areas as well.

Interestingly, Mr Reinert is a professional poker player (one of the top 500 in the world) and also the founder of a wine consulting firm that bears his name.  Hence, the “all-in” moniker on the wine label. His head wine maker is Sam Baxter from Terra Valentine.

This Monterey (Arroyo Seco) Pinot Noir is priced at $14.99 at Costco and is very representative of the nice Pinot that comes from the cool, foggy vineyards on the Monterey Peninsula.  Pours a nice ruby red in the glass; nose is fresh, vibrant, young and juicy.  Light in the mouth with big flavor, red fruit, cherry, raspberry, with a little Dr. Pepper/Cherry Coke towards the finish.

I think this is a good buy for Pinot fans, especially fans of coastal CA wines.  It’s easy drinking and super food friendly with time to run in the bottle where it may develop further.

Can you compare it to a Belle Glos or Diora Pinot? Ie - almost can heavy but Pinot feel?

The Diora is a new favorite of mine. Compared to the Reinart, it's much more fruity, with a silky smooth finish (like silk sheets on your tongue). This is the Monterey juice that I love - natural cherry without goofy blending needed to get it that way.

Reinert is more "sparkling" or "acidic" - hence the Dr. Pepper comment in the article. It's good, just different.

Belle Glos is a fuller wine (I've had all of them - including great bottles aboard Royal Caribbean cruises, and prefer the Clark & Telephone over the Las Alturas).

Diora beats them all, in my opinion...

(The Meiomi Pinot - popular at Costco - has good and okay years. But in the same way that Seven Deadly Zins has that "artificial" smokiness, the Meiomi has artificial body)

Reminded me a lot of last time I had Wagner Meiomi Belle Glos; have not had Diora
