2014 Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir

2014 Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir

I caught wind from a Twitter fan that this wine had hit stores around the Southeast, and I happened to be on my way to Costco shortly after.  I found it for $17.99, and I have to say, it’s one of the best Pinots in this price range that I’ve had in quite a while.

Love the detail on the back of the label. It says just what you want to read about the wine.

We first saw the Baileyana Pinot about three years ago when we reviewed the 2009 vintage, and I loved it then.  I might like this current vintage even more (Note: the Chardonnay is excellent too).  My notes on the 2014 are similar to the 2009 but this one has a bit more heft to it, which I prefer, making it a Pinot that would appeal to many different types of red wine fans, not just Pinot lovers.

The wine starts strong right from the nose, it’s fresh, floral, earthy and spicy.  Medium in body, nice spice throughout; flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate, a touch of Dr. Pepper; nicely balanced all around, finishes large and in charge, hangs around forever.

This is not a wimpy Pinot, but it’s also not over the top in any way.  I think it’s in that sweet spot of balance that you so rarely find for under $20.  This is a major score, a great food wine, and an awesome wine to share with friends or take to a dinner party.  Nice job here Costco.
