So I’ve picked up quite a few new Kirkland Signature offerings that have hit the stores by me, and there’s a lot of them, more than I’ll be able to review in the next month or so, but you can bet I’m going to give it a shot. And I’m going to start with a few bottles that I’m really curious about – the Cabs from great areas of Napa. They follow an awesome year in 2012 with an almost equally awesome year in 2013. So today we’ll take a look at the 2013 Oakville Cabernet, one of my favorite areas of Napa. Price was $18.99.
This is a very nice Napa Cab that you would pay twice this price tag for in almost any other form. I love this one. What a steal for $19. Dark pour, and fruit forward nose, slight spice with pepper aromas. In the mouth, this wine is a joy, loads of dark fruit and black cherry, undertones of dark chocolate and mocha, something on the finish I just can’t get my taste buds on but I’ve been there before, almost like the lumber aisle at Home Depot (I think the pros call it pencil shavings). This is a very composed wine, centered and easy to understand.
I just gave it an hour in glass and came back and it’s even better. I’m a huge fan. Great buy here.

Went back there again today at lunch time and they were just stocking 2013 Cameron Hughes Lot 600 cabernet ($25). Didn't get one yet to try, but I would guess that it wouldn't be too bad for the price. CH had released some pretty decent cabs in recent years. Amazon has it for $75/bottle.

This Kirkland Cab I couldn't find yesterday at a Costco in Mtn View, CA, but I found two cases of 2012 Cameron Hughes Private Reserve cab discounted by $10 (to $39.99). Bought 2, tried 1 and it was excellent. I went back today and bought 2 more and it seemed like it was going fast...down to about a case now. Have you tried this cab before? Thanks.

I have not seen it at stores near me but will definitely be on the lookout. Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like one I would enjoy.

I think the word you want (for the mysterious "pencil shavings" flavor) is CEDAR. Sounds delicious...but I see from the pic of the label that it's 14.9%. I just can't bring myself to drink those high alcohol wines! The 14.5% and up concept seems to be getting more and more common, too. For those of us wine drinkers in the 120#-and-under weight class, a single glass at that strength is about all we can take. Also, I don't like the alcohol burn in the mouth-- was it somehow mitigated by the deliciousness of the flavors in this case? If I ran the world, 13.5% would be the upper limit for alcohol in wines. ;-)
