2012 Chateau Barde-Haut Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

2012 Chateau Barde-Haut Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

This bottle has been staring me down on my last few trips to Costco so I finally pulled the trigger, knowing that these Saint Emilion Grand Cru Bordeaux often turn out to be a real treat and they offer a nice change of pace from the big, fruity forward California Cabernet.

And that’s exactly what this wine proved to be – a bit of a breath of fresh air, old world in style, elegant and simple, and overall, very enjoyable.

This wine is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, blended beautifully, and the price at Costco was $29.99, which I thought was pretty fair for this wine and about what you will find it retailing for online.  It was tight coming out of the bottle so I decanted for a good hour, hour plus, before really digging in.

The airtime opened the aromas on the nose, and soon those lovely earthy scents of Bordeaux jumped from the glass.  In the mouth, this wine is medium in body with red fruit, plum, red licorice and mocha flavors, slightly sweet; finishes chalky, dry and lasting.

Again, be sure to decant for a while.  It took me a while to really begin to dive into this wine as I waited for it to show its true colors.  But it when it did, it was worth every penny.  This is a nice buy on quality French Bordeaux.
