2012 Castello di Uzzano Chianti Classico

2012 Castello di Uzzano Chianti Classico

I always enjoy buying Chianti Classicos at Costco because the prices are hard to beat, they are typically in the $13-19 range and the wines usually taste great.  This is a DOCG bottle that I found for $13.99.  I found it right next to another of my favorite Costco Chianti Classicos, the Castello di Monsanto (which you should snap up too while they are still around), and was anxious to give it a shot.

Vibrant nose, smells like a fancy wine with a little of that dusty book scent you get with Tuscan wines; a touch of barnyard on the initial pour but that dies off fast.  In the mouth, this wine is soft, gentle, elegant.  Flavor profile is rather simple: herbs, cherry, raspberry and then a healthy dose of acidity kicks in and sticks to the cheeks.  Finishes super dry.

Great food wine.  We made a simple red sauce with chicken and a spinach salad with beets and goat cheese, and the wine paired with everything nicely.  Chiantis like this are pretty versatile food-wise, and I’m drinking another glass right now post-meal and the wine remains interesting on its own.

I think this is a good wine at a good price.  Chianti fans should take note, but if your store, like mine, still stocks that Monsanto, I think it’s worth a few bucks more.
