2012 Bodega Cuarto Dominio Chento Malbec

Published: Jul 25, 2016 · Modified: Feb 2, 2017 by Editor ·

Massive bargain here.  Great wine at an amazing price.  For anyone who's ever written to me and said they can't find the wines we review at their local Costco, I really hope you can find them all someday, but I really really hope you can find this one.  At only $13.89 at Costco, it is half the price you will find it at other outlets.  If you live in Atlanta you better move fast, because I've likely scooped them up already.  This just became my go to red.

This is a single vineyard Malbec, that to me, and call me crazy, tastes like a Grand Cru St Emilion Bordeaux.  I say that because I think wine reviews are really individual and personal.  That's how this one hit me; really good, firing on all cylinders.

Super dark on the pour with aromas that remind me of a fresh pair of sneakers, with a touch of earth and flower.  Elegant in the mouth with flavors of blackberry, black licorice, a little sour cherry; good acidity, tannins are soft and the wine is drinking just perfectly right now; the finish is superb, lasting, sticky and multi dimensional.

This is one of the best buys I've found at Costco this year.  I can't believe the quality at this price.  I could drink this with any mid-week meal or a special occasion and enjoy it just the same.

Of all the options you have recommended I have been able to find here in Miami FL the Chateau Larteau and was so good that I bought 3 cases... Sadly, it's the only one found thanks for the tip.

That was a good one for sure. I hope you're able to find more, especially since I'm in a neighboring state, but with Costco, you never know. If there are other good buys you find there, let me know and I'll try to find them too.

Are you sure that's the right item number? I've called a number of Costcos and they don't show it in their system. They've searched by name as well. I know things can be regional but I've always had luck with them at least showing the item, even if it's not available in the area.

I just checked my receipt and that's the number that's listed although it is abnormally long for some reason. Not sure what to tell you, unfortunately. I don't remember ever seeing a number that long in the past.

Here in SoCA Spanish wines apparently AREN'T as big as on the East Coast. 🙁

However, I DID run across a Spanish potential steal [but at just ONE of our local COSTCOs?], the '07 Bodega Los Aljibes "Selectus" @ $11.99, their high end product. Seeing you reviewed a cheaper wine of theirs, I'm wondering if you've tried this 94 pt "Wine Advocate" blend?

Also, some of our locals have FULL displays of the '14 Kirkland Signature Cotes du Rhone Villages, with at least one being into the '15! Knowing your fondness for previous vintages, I'm wondering if you've seen/tried either?

    Thanking in advance...

Thanks for the recommendations. I have not tried either but plan to go to the store this week so I will look for them. Appreciate the suggestions. They sound right up my alley.

Another potential "steal", though perhaps ONLY on the West Coast? '14 Greg Norman Estates Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir, COSTCO listing @ $9.99, but on a $7.69 "special". Drinking nicely now, I'm even anticipating IMPROVEMENT over the next 12 mos or so! [Cf. my notes on Cellar Tracker & Delectable, the latter of which I've tried to link below.]

I too found the ’07 Bodega Los Aljibes “Selectus" in a WA Costco (Tukwila), and as I was paying for it the cashier said, "Oh, we've got the Selectus back in!" I asked if it was good, and he said "It's an $80 bottle that somehow we are able to sell for $12." It is really nice. I found it in another Costco (Gig Harbor), and bought a case. A steal, indeed.

You guys are spot on with the Selectus. I have a review posting in a few days. I think it's an amazing buy at $11.99. Better buy it quick because I can see this one disappearing fast. I'm going to cellar a few for fun and review them in 3-4 years.
