2011 Orben Rioja

2011 Orben Rioja

What a wine this is, Wow.  The nose really starts things off.  Wait until you get a load of this nose.  The aromas jump out of the glass in a very unique combination of Wrigley mint gum and an herbal garden.  I don’t think I’ve ever smelled a wine quite like this before, and I like it.

Before the nose, you’ll likely notice the dark, blood red pour.  This is a big, full bodied Rioja that packs a major punch, but it’s executed in an elegant, beautiful package that is a nice mix of modern and old world. Red fruit, plum flavors with earth undertones, some sawdust/wood on the finish which sticks around for forever.

I love this one for $21 at Costco.  It’s a perfect wine as the weather gets cooler, a good food wine for red meat focused or other hearty cuisine, and another example of the amazing value you can find from Spain at almost every price point.

I really enjoy your comments on the various wines - has anybody seen any wines from Portugal lately- particularly the Atlanta area?

Only a few. That's one region I'd like to see represented more at Costco. Hopefully that will change.

We started drinking Rioja wine after visiting this great appellation last year. Not sure I've seen this one at our Costco but I will certainly be looking for it. But what we have been enjoying is costcos $13.57 2006 Conde bel Rioja gran reserve.

I got what appeared to be the last bottle in Charleston, SC a couple weeks ago. Glad to hear it's a good one!

Would anyone know if these wines are ever available at the Costco in Greenwood Indiana? I've looked for a couple that have been in the wine blog but have not been able to find them.

Pamela, Greenwood is my store as well. Sometimes I have better luck at the Castleton store though when it comes to Wine. I think Greenwood is a work in progress.
