2013 Las Vertientes Benchmark Reserva Red

Published: Jan 9, 2016 · Modified: Dec 24, 2016 by Editor ·

Here's one of those wines you might not buy unless you read this site.  I was going to walk right past this bottle, simply for the fact that nothing jumped out at me at first, and I wasn't clear what it is.  I'm still not clear what it is but something did jump out at me, and that was Costco's discounted price of $17.49, reflecting a $6 off discount.  Now I was a bit more interested, and so I dropped it in my cart.

Online I've seen this bottle as high as $35, so it appears Costco's discounted, and even non-discounted price, is pretty good.  And the wine?  Well, I really enjoyed it.  It's a red blend, and I couldn't determine the varietal makeup from anything on the label or online.  So it's a bit of a mystery, but a fun one at that.  Wood, earth and spice on the nose; the wine is full bodied with tannins that are soft and juicy, surrounding the flavors of heavy white chocolate and mocha (like standing next to a Starbucks barista making drinks), dark fruit and spice box, into a finish that is dry and lasting.

If you're open to the mystery of this wine, I think you'll be rewarded.  I was surprised, and very much delighted as we made our way through this bottle.

According to Vivino it's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. I'll have to look for it in chilly Minnesota
