2014 Gerard Bertrand Syrah-Grenache Languedoc

2014 Gerard Bertrand Syrah-Grenache Languedoc

We always love finding a new vintage of this one from one of my favorite producers, Gerard Bertrand.

Whether you find their Rose (which I just now realized we never reviewed; excellent nonetheless and an unforgettable bottle), or their Corbieres red blend, or this inexpensive Languedoc red blend, you can’t go wrong. Bang for the buck I always find Gerard Bertrand to deliver, and this next vintage of the Languedoc blend is no exception.

I also love Costco’s price on this at only $9.99, which is well below even the online retail outlets that are priced closer to $17.  Last time we reviewed this wine we went 88 points, which I feel is still about right (87 plus one point bonus for value).

Inside is a great blend of Syrah and Grenache from France’s famed Languedoc region in the southern part of the country, which is known for great value wine since it largely remains off the radar of many mainstream wine buyers.

The area neighbors the more commonly known Rhone region where similar varietals are produced, and being perhaps more recognizable, at least in the States, the Rhone wines can often times command slightly higher prices.

Let’s get into the wine.  It starts fruity on the nose, with flavors of raspberry and blackberry; then a touch of anise, herbs and pepper on the finish.

This wine is medium plus to full in body with vibrant young fruit throughout. It’s ready to drink now and perfect for a wide range of cuisine, lending it to be an ideal choice for those inexpensive midweek picks when you just need an easy bottle for the table. This one is perfect.

Be sure to keep an eye for other Gerard Bertrand bottles too as they come and go on a regular basis.  When you creep closer to $20 in price from this producer you can find some real gems.

Thanks for the valuable reviews. But when are we ever going to get back to12.5-13.5% alcohol wines again?! I just read a review in a medical magazine reporting that you have a better chance to getting to age 95, by drinking 2 beers or 2 glasses of wine per day (!TRUE!), than exercise ,etc. Also be a little overweight- not skinny. And I’m not a great beer drinker...

We just tried our first bottle of the 2014 GERARD BERTRAND SYRAH-GRENACHE LANGUEDOC. It was a big surprise! So much wine for such a reasonable price! ??

Better move fast on this one...it's got that telltale asterisk in the upper R corner, which means that's all they'll be getting.

Thanks, for enlightening me on the asterisk! I liked the Gerard and am buying more now that I know what you said.
