2013 Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel

2013 Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel

It’s been a long time since I’ve reviewed a Zin.  I apologize for the gap as I’m just now noticing it.  Plus a few readers asked if I could take a look at the Kirkland Sonoma Zin, which I was able to find on my next trip to Costco for $9.99.

We enjoyed this wine under the most perfect of circumstances – a beautiful Atlanta evening, about 70 degrees and with the grill going.  We tried three different kinds of sausage with grilled onions and an assortment of vegetables.  It was not only a great meal, but one that was made better by this Zin that I think is a perfect spring BBQ wine.

Pours a dark purple with a nose that jumps out of the glass with notable pepper and spice box aromas to a degree it almost makes you sneeze.  That spice comes back in the finish but in between you have a succulent, fruit packed, jammy, and all together nice wine.  I was really impressed at this price point.

Definitely one to seek out that should be fairly easy to find.  I’d buy a couple.

Hi Jessica, and thanks for writing in. I think getting your wine at Costco for a wedding is a great idea and I've had several people write in to ask my thoughts in the past. It gets a little tricky only because the selection at different Costco stores will vary across the country. So I'd hate to give you a list of wines and then have you be unable to find any of them at your store. But here's an article I wrote for TheDailyMeal.com with some good shopping tips to helps you find some good deals: http://www.thedailymeal.com/drink/8-secrets-scoring-wine-deals-costco After reading that, I would print out this list of our Top Picks: http://costcowineblog.com/tag/top-pick/ We update this list with the best buys that we find so you could use this as a guide to see which of these wines are carried at your store. One red wine that jumps off this list immediately is the Kirkland Rioja for $6.99: http://costcowineblog.com/2010-kirkland-signature-rioja-reserva/ Great buy. There are many others on the list. I'm sure you'll be able to find some of them. Hope that helps, and thanks for reading the site. Andrew

Sampled this one from our local Costco here in Iowa, and I agree with this review. A fine, well-balanced wine with nice notes of berry fruit, subtle oak, and a long finish. I found it hard to believe that the alcohol % was so high (15.3%!) Not a bit of heat or heaviness that sometimes accompanies zinfandels with this high alcohol level. I bought 6 bottles at this price. A perfect grilling/stew/pasta with red sauce wine at a great price. Looks like a good supply on hand at our store, too.
