2013 Ferrari-Carano Merlot

Published: Nov 12, 2016 · Modified: Feb 12, 2021 by Editor ·

I found a great buy on this wine at Costco.  The normal Costco price of $18.99 beats almost anything I found online, but this week in the store I found it with a $6 discount, putting the final price at $12.99, or about half of what you will find it for online.  The big question from there is what kind of wine are we talking about?  Well, I'm pleased to say it's a nice one; pleasant, fruity, easy drinking, all around a very good wine at this exceptional price.

Begins with aromas of perfume, earth, herbs and fresh flowers; soft, medium body; plenty of fruit, strawberry, pomegranate, some acidic cranberry; finishes pretty nice, very pleasant, and not bad in terms of duration.  This is a good crowed pleaser, versatile across many palates, leading me to likely include on my forthcoming Thanksgiving Day Costco wine picks.

I enjoyed this one, especially at the reduced price.  If pushing closer to $20 however, I'd probably opt for one of the recent Spanish bottles we've reviewed that brings a little more power and old world charm.

Agree! We bought a couple of bottles at the Cumberland Mall Costco, after being turned onto it by the rep on the floor. Then went back and bought more!

I tried this one twice, I give it an 87. For me the fruit was covered by the 14.5% alcohol. Don't get me wrong this wine is extremely well made. If my palate had picked up a bit more fruit I would buy this by the case at that price and I am cheap. Good body, tannins, and not flabby with extra sugar that so many like these days. Tried it twice. With the alcohol content not sure if it will age but that is out of my area of knowledge. If it does then I am making a mistake not buying more and laying it down. Agree with the Holiday recommendation. People would be impressed if you brought it as host gift. I plan on doing that.

I would recommend the 2014 Bogle Merlot at $7.99. Not normally a Merlot drinker but I bought this because of price and a 91 rating at the Cali state fair. Tried a bottle and went back and bought some more.
