2011 Churchills Estates Douro

2011 Churchills Estates Douro

2011 Churchills Estates DouroRight alongside Spain in my book for value wines right now is Portugal.  It just seems like almost every bottle I buy from Portugal would satisfy me had I paid twice as much for it.  And this Douro bottle fits in that group.

This, to me, drinks like a $25-$30 wine.  It’s a big, luscious wine, and one that red wine fans will likely enjoy even if you’re not too familiar with the varietal makeup – which is (almost) even parts of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz.  The nose is permeating on this wine that pours a deep dark menacing purple.  Fruit is plentiful, dark fruit, black and blueberry flavor, with pronounced chocolate notes toward the dry, sticky finish.

Lots to like here for $14.99 at Costco.  Keep an eye out for this bottle.  It was kind of hidden at my Costco where they frequently stash the lesser known wines, and that is an area I am always keen to check out (another great bottle from this ‘secret area’ was this Riesling I also thought was a steal at $15).

Hope I can find this one at my Costco. I am a big fan of Portuguese wines. Thanks for the heads up on this one.

Can I ask what Costco you typically shop at? I saw somewhere on here you are from Oregon. I live in Salem and it seems our Costco wine selection isn't quite as good as yours!

Hi, and thanks for the email. I lived in OR and WA for several years but am currently living in the Atlanta area and that is where most of my wines come from. I work with another reviewer Michael based in San Diego so perhaps you will be able to find some of the wines he reviews. The distribution of Costco's wines is a hard one to figure out. Sometimes I will hear that a person in a neighboring state can't find one of the wines I review but someone in Tokyo did. Andrew
