2009 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape
|Wow, all the right components are packed into this beauty; it’s evident from the get go and gets more intense after a little air. Chateauneufs are some of my favorite wines, and I’ve learned that I definitely prefer them with a little more age, especially considering these wines can age for 20+ years.|
So this wine is young, but it’s still insanely good. I wish I had the budget to throw five bottles in the cellar and drink one every 3 years to see how it was progressing.
Chateau de Beaucastel is one of the biggest names in the Rhone valley and with good reason. This wine is spicy on the nose and pretty dark in the glass. The mouthfeel is where it really starts to excel. Soft silky tannins that you would expect with more age. And awesome flavor: red fruits, red licorice, spicy and peppery. Perfect structure to this wine.
It’s going on the Gold List. If it drinks this good now, it’s hard to imagine what it would be like in 10-15 years. Costco’s price of $84.99 was about 20% cheaper than I saw the same exact bottle selling for at a nearby wine shop.
